The usage of sexual and relationship models to define political parties and movements


Lakoffs model describes politics and essentially state level politics in family terms with the head of state as the head of a family. While Lakoffs model is somewhat controversial in academic circles especially because of it’s rather unique approach to power and control[1] it is none the less quite famous and a very commonly used model in describing the nature of state power. The basis of this model rests on its view of conservative and liberal political parties and their view on the nature of leadership. Conservatives are viewed to look for a strong authoritarian centralized leader figure who rules the state with what is essentially an iron grip. While liberals are viewed as looking for a welfare state that takes care of its citizens and promotes laziness and baby killing. These are the starting points of lakoff’s model. The point from which he starts to go more in depth at both political factions and their views on the world to discover a very deep undercurrent of misunderstanding between the two political factions. While it is a generally accepted reality that the far end of conservatism leads to fascism and the far end of liberalism leads to anarchy[2], the perception that both political factions have of each other in modern day debate in the USA is badly twisted by their mutual hatred and hate-speech. Lakoff goes deeper than the surface levels of hate-speech and seeks to truly understand both political parties and why they form as such. His academic background in linguistics leads a level of credence to his claims of a psychological background but still I personally found his theory lacking. I will however describe it in its major points as they relate to both conservatives and liberals in the present day US presidential elections.




Conservatives:

According to Lakoff the main undercurrent in the conservative party is its desire to for a strong state and the desire of individuals to live according to their heart. While this is what his books state albeit not verbatim it is the general idea. When reading Lakoff’s more recent ideas it is easy to notice that he has began to change his ideas, if not dramatically then at least noticeably[3]. When one truly studies politics of any state especially one as convoluted as the United States of America one must keep in mind that for every truth a politician says he invents ten lies. While Lakoff is generous in his assessment of the honesty and in his book is rather quick to assume that the reason why the conservative strong father model with its moral codes is getting through to a certain kind of people because they feel an affinity for its morals. He is also rather quick to bypass without mention that the reason people feel an affinity for one political model or another is not an inbuilt code and ethics, it’s a taught code and ethics. As he said in an interview one of the reasons why conservatism is so strong at defining the language and the wording of a debate in its favor is that since the 1970’s they’ve been spending billions of dollars in what is essentially marketing for their political agenda[4]. The conservative undercurrent generated by this advertising can be compressed into the following statements “Conservatives take care of you while you’re still in the womb but once your out you’re on your own”. The present trend in the US where conservatives are seen as being for small government, fiscal responsibility, pro-life, pro small business and so forth is on very dubious grounds when one truly observes the results of conservative politics as opposed to conservative marketing[5]. When a party can define themselves as pro-life and their opponents as pro-choice it is not a long stretch of imagination in peoples head to define one party as being for all life and another party as being full of murderers. As is clearly obvious in the present US political debate with the various hate groups on a mission to murder doctors who perform abortions, conservatism isn’t about pro-life nor is liberalism about pro-choice, the debate is far more academic and murky than something that can be clearly defined into two camps. Lakoff’s strict father model and the caretaker model can be applied here to understand the mindset in psychological terms. Conservatives as a whole are not nearly as much about abortion or strong government or fiscal responsibility as they are about a government that strongly states that it is for these things. In essence it matters not what the state does, only as long as it does it authoritatively, as is blatantly obvious in the lack of a public outcry due to the torture memos from bush’s office or bombing the city of Fallujah in Iraq and causing an estimated 150.000 fatalities[6]. The best way to describe the conservative mindset as Lakoff views it is not in focusing on issues but focusing on grand scale models. Using relationship and parenting models to define the actions of political parties and their supporters. So while the conservative ideology is officially one thing it is unofficially something completely different. Same holds true for liberals. While it is important to understand what kind of a purpose conservative politics officially has it is nearly irrelevant when compared to its actions. 

Liberals:

According to Lakoff the main undercurrent of the liberal party is its desire for a caretaker state that takes care of its citizens. As conservatives look for a Shepard to rule over the state liberals look for a mother hen who will look over her eggs and underlings with love and care and make sure everyone has the best that society has to offer. While these models are adequate and sometimes even excel in portraying the modern differences between the conservatives and liberals. It does not in anyway portray the starting positions for both movements and why they ended up in their present configurations. While it is very easy and politically correct to disregard any real differences between the political parties and focus on how they are all cuddly and all about protecting the same things, freedom, liberty and a share of the American dream, it is often just as easy to forget that both the liberal and conservatives movements actually stand for different things not just the same thing in a different package. I’ll leave the actual details of lakoff’s model for the liberals on sidelines and simply point out that most conservatives view liberals as baby killing, bible burning, anarcho-femmo-nazi-jew-black-white-hitlerlovers. Since the political debate has escalated to such a point in its use of hate-speech that any real differences are difficult to bring to the fore and even if they brought to the surface the conversation quickly returns to emotional substance and not the issues.


Comparisons and differences, are there any?

I will however point out that while I might as well use the terms democrat and republican and compare their differences I believe it is more accurate to describe the differences between liberals and conservatives. The terms and definitions of liberals and conservatives are somewhat more concrete than democrats and republicans, especially post-bush. The irony of comparing cold war conservatives and 21st century conservatives should not escape anyone[7]. I will not delve deeper into the obvious mask statements that both parties make in an effort to distract any potentially aware voters from the simple fact that the Democratic Party and the Republican Party are nearly interchangeable[8]. Despite some rather cosmetic differences in their policies what an astute observer will be left with is a distinct impression of watching a puppet show. Both sides of the show are controlled by the very same interests that Eisenhower and others warned about, the military industrial complex[9]. Just as any good student or master of political sciences will tell you, there are no conspiracies, there are no men behind the curtain, politicians are always honest, there is no doublespeak, war is peace and there is no world behind you outside the cave where you’ve always been in. Doublespeak and Orvellianism aside it should be obvious to anyone in the political field left, right, center, top, bottom or anywhere else that former chairmen of vast military corporations should not lead civilian governments and be in charge of the military budget decisions[10]. People are fallible and temptation to embezzle billions of dollars legally is difficult to resist. Few even reputable political scientists know that in the summer of 2001 there was an investigation ongoing into the budget of the Pentagon due to 2.7 trillion dollars being unaccounted for[11]. After the 9.11 this investigation was dropped in silence and nothing of it has been heard since. If you are the chairman of a major corporation such as Enron with billions of dollars at your disposal you have the ability to buy any congressman or senator or even president you want. When both candidates for presidential elections, Obama and Mccain receive millions from their corporate friends no matter which side wins both candidates are bought and paid for. What does it matter which side has more supporters, Democrats or Republicans when in the 2004 presidential elections there were 34.000 reported cases of electoral fraud[12]. Voting precincts with only a few hundred eligible adults totaled tens of thousands of votes. Diebold voting machines have no paper trail, no way to recount the votes, no way to see what really happened, democracy is left into the hands of the vote counters and the vote counters have a abysmal record[13]. What should a political observer say of this situation, does it matter that Obama shakes the hand of a Jordanian and Mccain dispatches his friends to Georgia as if he is a president already? What does it mater who supports who when both candidates receive millions, both candidates go to the same schools, same fraternities, when the votes aren’t even tallied anymore and we have a green box that may or may not count your vote with software that nobody is allowed to read that can be hacked in under 15 seconds[14]. 

Conclusions:

So then, as a conclusion I must ask? What does it matter what Obama says, what does it matter what Mccain says? What does it matter what the activists think when neither party says the truth, when both parties hate to look at the simple truths of our time. There is only one form of government where the military-industrial leaders also lead the civilian government, with rampant corruption, creeping militarism, militarization of the police, suppression of dissent, torture, illegal wars and occupations, massive civilian casualities inflicted intentionally. There is only one word that can describe this form of government, it is the F word. And I assure you, the F word is not Fuck, it is something even more vulgar that I will not write here.

The gilded cage and the impression of democracy, I hope future generations will not know us as the lazy generation, the generation that had it all but let it slip simply because we could not stand up, open our eyes and admit that out government is no longer for the people by the people. It is for the corporations by the corporations. In the distance I can see the day when our politicians will be like our sports teams, covered in stickers. “Coca-cola for Obama, keeping our young politicians active and supporting our way of life!”

Closing remarks:
While doing some research on this topic I had an email exchange with Paul Craig Roberts(He served as an Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan Administration earning fame as the "Father of Reaganomics".) , one of the most outspoken critics of the present US government stopping a mere hairsbreadth away from calling it a fascist state “Unless Congress immediately impeaches Bush and Cheney, a year from now the US could be a dictatorial police state at war with Iran.” So please don’t treat my opinions as that of just a disgruntled outsider to the political scene. The opinion that the present US presidential elections is nearly irrelevant since both parties are bought and paid for is one that is shared very widely amongst the politically informed. I simply ask that you treat my essay in a fair manner. 

Suomen kansallisen identiteettipolitiikan kehitysvaiheet

Johdanto

Minkä tahansa itsenäisen valtion selviytymisen kannalta on tärkeää olla olemassa kansallinen identiteettiprojekti. Suomen tapauksessa tämä kansallinen identiteettiprojekti otettiin lähinnä mielivaltaisten rajojen sisäpuolella olevan väen omaksi maaksi. Samankaltaisesti joka ikinen eurooppalainen valtio on syntynyt täysin mielivaltaisen rajan sisäpuolelle valtiota johtaneen tahon sotilaallisen mahdin projektointikyvyn myötä. Aion tässä esseessä lähinnä pohtia kansallisvaltion syntymistä ja siihen johtanutta kehitystä Suomen tapauksessa. Miksi Suomi syntyi, miksi juuri tänne, miten, minne nyt, miksi ynnä muita tämänkaltaisia kysymyksiä.

Alku ja varhaishistoriaa

Valitettavasti Suomessa ja maailmanlaajuisesti on tabua puhua sivilisaatiosta, joka ei ala Lähi-idästä, Mesopotamiasta tai Egyptistä ja siten moni tieteellinen tosiasia jää käsittelemättä. On todistettu tosiasia, että Itä-Euroopassa ja Bulgariassa olevat ruohokukkulat ovat alunperin ihmisen rakentamia eräänlaisia hautamonumentteja, jotka voidaan alustavasti ajoittaa olevan rakennettu noin 12.000 Eaa[1]. Valitettavasti vain tämänkaltaiset tutkimukset katoavat akateemiseen mustaan aukkoon poliittisesti korrektin totuuden edestä. Tämänkaltainen tutkimus olisi kuitenkin äärimmäisen tärkeää muun muassa suomenkaltaiselle maalle, jotta olisi mahdollista selittää Suomen sukuisten kansojen levittäytyminen laajoille alueille ja kielellisen alueen täydellinen hajaantuminen Suomesta Ural-vuoristolle asti. Olisi äärimmäisen tärkeää tietää miksi 3000 Eaa Suomessa kukoistanut hautamonumentti kulttuuri vähitellen rapautui ja lopulta katosi lähes kokonaan noin 500Eaa[2]. Niin kauan, kuin tämä kysymys on vastaamatta, on mahdotonta luoda realistista kuvaa suomalaisesta menneisyydestä. Miksi suomalaiset ovat suomalaisia on kysymys, johon ei todennäköisesti löydy vastausta ennen kuin voidaan selvittää miksi suomensukuiset kansat ovat alunperin tulleet Suomeen ja rakentaneet Skandinavian isoimpia hautamonumentteja ja sen jälkeen kadonneet ja muuttaneet etelään. Tämän ensimmäisen todistetun exoduksen jälkeen on Suomeen tullut ainakin 3 uutta muuttoaaltoa, lähes samaan aikaan, mutta kuitenkin vähän toistensa jälkeen[3]. Ensimmäinen muuttoaalto tuli Saksan sukuisten kansojen levittäydyttyä Rooman alueelle. 


  Ympäristön lämmettyä koko 0-250 luku, jota seurasi nopea kylmettymisen kausi, johti monta ennen pohjoisessa asunutta kansaa työntymään syvälle etelään kylmentymisen seurauksena viljelyskyvyn romahdettua[4]. Tästä käynnistyneenä Euroopan-laajuisena väestön massamuuttona on Suomeen ilmeisesti siirtynyt lähinnä itä-balttilaista ja saamelaista kansaa tai rannikolla ollut väestö on siirtynyt etelään ja pois Suomesta. Joka tapauksessa 300-700 luvulta Suomesta löytyy lähinnä saamelais-kulttuuriin, shamanismiin tai hajanaiseen asutukseen viittaavaa materiaalia. Tämä ei todista Suomen olleen tyhjä vaan vain Suomessa olleen väestöä, joka ei jättänyt paljoakaan jälkiä. Suomen äärimmäisen hyvä maantieteellinen ja kalastuksellinen asema olisi vetänyt Suomeen samankaltaista asutusta kuin Etelä-Ruotsissa ja muissa Baltian maissa, jos Suomi olisi ollut tyhjä niin kuin ruotsalaiset historioitsijat haluavat sinnikkäästi väittää. 

Noin 900 luvulla viikinkien ajan huipussa perusti Kievan Rus [5]vähitellen asutusta maantieteellisen Suomen läheisyyteen, historiallisena kuriositeettina uudisasutus seuraa lähes poikkeuksetta kaavaa, jossa kaupungit perustetaan jokien alajuoksulle ja pienempiä asutuksia yläjuoksulle, jotka keräävät alueeltaan materiaaleja ja juoksuttavat materiaalit alas jokea. Täten käyttäen helppoa ja yksinkertaista kuljetustapaa lähes ilmaiseksi. Suomessa näin ei käynyt vaan Kievan Rus:in perustama asutus oli lähinnä pieniä kyliä Karjalan alueella ja on olemassa äärimmäisen vähän historiallista todistusaineistoa Kievalaisten perustaneen minkäänlaisia kaupunkeja esimerkiksi Turun-saaristoon tai Viipuriin tai moneen muuhun tarkoitukseen erinomaisesti soveltuvaan joenuomaan. Lähes omalaatuisena historiallisena kuriositeettina on Suomeen äärimmäisen hitaasti levinneen asutuksen keskittyminen pieniin kyliin lähelle aluetta alunperin asuttaneen kansan keskustaa. Kuten venäläisillä hidas Karjalan asuttaminen ja ruotsalaisilla Turun saaristo. 

Vaikka 1000 ja 1200 luvun korkea lämpötila aiheutti sellaisia ympäristöllisiä muutoksia, kuten viininviljelyä Skotlannissa, oli Suomi silti sinnikkäästi ”tyhjä.” Tätä tyhjyyttä on hyvä muistaa kristillisen ajan tyhjyytenä, tyhjyytenä ihmisistä, koska pakanoita ei yleisesti pidetty ihmisinä. Pääasiallinen syy Suomen tyhjyyteen ja Suomeen hitaasti levittäytyneeseen sivilisaatioon on löydettävissä samasta suuntauksesta, joka alkoi jo 500Eaa. Kreikkalaiset pitivät itseään ainoina Euroopan kansalaisina ja muita ihmisiä orjina tai koirina[6]. Kreikkalaisten antipatioita muita kansoja kohtaan ei tarvitse historiallisesti todistella sen enempää kuin esimerkiksi kristinuskon tahtoa levittäytyä väkivalloin. Silti jo vuonna 1400-1300 Eaa Euroopan keltit kykenivät valmistamaan kullattuja kalenterihattuja, jotka olivat 88cm samaan aikaan kun mykeneläinen kulttuuri koki alkuhetkiään[7]. Mutta kelttiläistä kulttuuria harvoin mainitaan historiassa tai valtio-opissa kelttiläisen kulttuurin äärimmäisen vahvan yhteisön ja yksilön vapauden periaatteen vuoksi, jota kreikkalaisessa kulttuurissa ei tunnettu Kreikan kulttuurin alkaneen kuningaskuntana ja diktatuureina kehittyneen siitä vähitellen demokratiaan. Kelttiläisen kulttuurin omaleimainen itsenäisyys ja yksilöllisyys hidasti yhtenäisen valtion tai valtiollisen rakenteen muodostumista ja siksi kelttiläiset yhteisöt jäivät yleensä melko pieniksi alle puolimiljoonaa ihmistä kattaviksi heimoyhteisöiksi. Tämä on tärkeä asia, joka pitää ehdottomasti tuoda esille, kun käsitellään Suomen varhaishistoriaa ja eteenkin ennen ruotsalaisten Suomeen tekemiä ristiretkiä ja väestön pakottamista kristinuskoon ja yleistä yhdentämispolitiikkaa. Hieman, kuten aborigiineille ei kelttiläisille eikä suomalaisille merkinnyt paljoakaan lause ”viekää minut johtajanne luokse.” Vaikka suomalaisilla ja kelteillä oli yhteisöllisyys ja kuningaskuntia ei näitä voida verrata Euroopassa 1100 luvulla olleisiin väkivalloin ylläpidettyyn orjuuteen jota kuningaskuntana pidetään[8].

Jos Suomea siis tarkastelee eurooppalaisen ”vahva keskitetty organisaatio = valtio” ei Suomessa ollut valtiota ja jos tähän liittää kristillisen ”pakanat = eläimiä” ei Suomessa ollut ihmisiä. Tämän pikaisen päätelmän jälkeen on ollut helppoa väittää Suomen olleen Tabula Rasa tai Terra Incognito, tyhjä taulu ja tuntematon maa. Tosiasia kuitenkin on, että Suomi on ollut asutettu ja melko kehittynyt alue jo paljon ennen ruotsalaisten harjoittamaa uudisastuttamista jossa Suomi ”asutettiin”. Miten muuten on mahdollista selittää suomalaisten geneettinen erilaisuus verrattuna kaikkiin Euroopan muihin kansoihin ja venäläisiin? Joko Suomi on ollut asutettu tarvittavan tiheästi ja tarkasti, jotta ruotsalaisten ja muiden Euroopan kansojen asutus Suomessa ei ole ollut tarvittavan voimakasta sekoittaakseen suomalaisen DNA:n omaansa tai suomalaiset ovat itsenäistyttyään Venäjästä yhtäkkiä mutatoituneet omaksi rodukseen?[9] Joka tapauksessa tämä lähtökohta on pidettävä mielessä kun etenemme esihistoriasta historialliseen aikaan. Suomessa on asunut geneettisesti eristäytynyt oma kansansa ENNEN kuin tänne on muuttanut ketään muita, Suomessa on ollut jonkinlaista sotilaallista keskittymistä ja hallinnollista keskittymistä jota vastaan ruotsalaiset, venäläiset, viikingit ynnä muut ovat joutuneet väliajoin hyökkäämään. Suomi siis on ollut asutettu ja matkalla sivistykseen omana kansanaan Ruotsin hyökättyä ja asutettua Suomen kuten Teutonic Order hyökkäsi ja asutti Viron. Tästä sotilaallisen vallan hyökkäyksestä heikomman kimppuun Suomi matkustaa 1300 luvulla Ruotsin vallan alle siirtomaana, jonka emomaa on aseellisesti vallannut alkuperäiskansalta. 

Keski-aika, Ruotsin valta ja hidas lipsahdus Venäjän vallan alle

Nyt kun siirrymme esihistoriallisen ajan Suomesta historiaalisen ajan Suomeen on hyvä muistaa Ruotsin ja Venäjän kilpailleen Suomesta, Ruotsin voittoa ei voida pitää vain sotilaallisena voittona vaan Suomi alistuttuaan Ruotsin vallan alle siirtyi Ruotsin valtapiiriin ja ruotsalaiseen kulttuuriin. Sitä edeltäneen Suomen pakanakulttuurit ja hallintorakenteet systemaattisesti hävitettiin[10] ja Ruotsi teki itsestään valtakulttuuriin ja valtakielen, joka on myöhempien historiallisten tietojen perusteella lähinnä kosmeettista. Geneettisesti ruotsalaisten osuus väestöstä on vielä noin 500 vuotta 1300-1800 luvun Suomea asutettuaan ja ruotsitettuaan silti häviävän pieni kuten aikaisemmin viittaamastani tutkimuksesta ilmenee. Käsitys siitä, että Suomi oli osa Ruotsia on kieltämätön historiallinen tosiasia, samankaltainen kieltämätön historiallinen tosiasia on se, että Ruotsi oli Suomessa lähinnä miehittäjä ja taloudellisen eliitin kotimaa eikä Suomen peruskansalaiset juuri Ruotsista tienneet tai osanneet. Suomea asutettaessa on kirkonkirjoihin merkitty ihmisten nimet ruotsalaisella perinteellä, koska kirkkoherrat ovat olleet ruotsalaisia, tästä syystä on moni suomalainen sukunimi myöhemmin myös suomennettu ja nämä sitä ennen ruotsinkieliset nimet on muutettu suomenkielisiksi. Myöhäiskeskiajalla sai talossa asuvat ihmiset sukunimensä talon mukaan ja siten moni geneettisesti suomalainen imeytyi ruotsalaisiin sukuihin olematta kuitenkaan koskaan ruotsalaisia. Vaikka on kiistaton tosiasia Ruotsin tuoneen Suomeen monta valtavaa kehitysaskelta, jotka nyky-yhteiskunnan näkökulmasta ovat pakollisia, tämän esseen tehtävä ei kuitenkaan ole kiistellä Ruotsin Suomelle tuomasta hyödystä vaan Suomen identiteetistä. Tämän identiteetin luomisen kannalta on äärimmäisen tärkeää pitää mielessä ruotsinkielisen eliitin hallinneen Suomea nimellisestä osana maataan lähinnä siirtomaana ja Suomen sukuisen kansan olleen lähinnä tämän eliitin alaisuudessa. Tämä identiteetti voimakkaan naapurin alla rauhassa olleesta kansasta, joka osaa pitää suunsa kiinni kun siihen on tarve ja kapinoida kun sopiva tilaisuus tulee, on siis muodostunut jo kauan ennen Venäjän valtaa ja itsenäisyyden aikaa, kuten moni moderni historioitsija haluaisi väittää. On helppoa unohtaa Suomen historiallisten juurten johtavan pitkälle pronssikaudelle ja Suomessa asuneen geneettisesti suomalaisia jo silloin. Tämä unohdus avaa historian tutkimisen valikoivalle muistille. Aloitetaan tutkimus tietystä pisteestä ja unohdetaan sitä edeltäneet ajat viralliselle totuudelle haitallisina.

Ruotsi vähitellen 1400-1700 luvuilla levitti valtapiiriään Suomen suunnalla pohjoisempaan ja itään päin, kunnes saavutti Tanskan levittäytymispyrkimykset pohjoisessa ja Venäjän idässä, saavuttaen lähes nykyiset Suomen ja Ruotsin rajat tietyillä pienillä eroilla. Koko tänä aikana Ruotsin hallitus piti Suomen talouselämää tiukassa valvonnassaan, jonka aikana lähes kaikkeen taloudelliseen toimintaan piti hakea kuninkaan tai hallituksen lupaa, mikä kuvastaa hyvin Suomessa ja Ruotsissa ollutta monarkiaan keskitettyä hallintoa, joka on halunnut hallita alaistensa elämää jokaista pientä yksityiskohtaa myöten. Tämä keskitetty hallinto, joka hidasti vapaata kauppaa vähitellen kostautui Ruotsille Ruotsin menetettyä sodassa vähitellen Baltian, Puolan, Saksan, siirtomaansa ja viimeiseksi Suomen. Ruotsi oli oman imperialistisen politiikkansa takia joutunut niin moneen lähes kokoajan jatkuvaan sotaan kaikkia vastaan, että vanhentunut talousmalli ei enää kyennyt ylläpitämään Ruotsin sotakoneistoa ja tästä seurasi lähes täydellinen romahdus napoleonistisessa sodassa[11]. Samoihin aikoihin Venäjän sotajoukot, joiden tehtävä oli pakottaa Ruotsi takaisin mannermaa-sulkuun, huomasi Ruotsin heikentyneen ja lähes romahtaneen jatkuneiden ongelmiensa takia ja miehitti lähes taistelutta koko Suomen, pysähtyen nykyisen Ruotsin rajalle pohjoiseen. Halutessaan Venäjä olisi varmasti voinut miehittää myös Ruotsin, mutta tämä olisi vaatinut joukkojen uudelleen organisointia lähinnä Venäjän rajalla tapahtuneesta pienestä selkkauksesta laajamittaiseksi sotatoimeksi Venäjän rajojen ulkopuolella. Tämä on historiallisesti harvoin ollut keisarillisen Venäjän päämäärä. Niin kauan kun keisarillinen Venäjä pystyi levittäytymään itään ja Siperiaan kohdaten vähäistä vastarintaa, ei sen sotilaallista ja taloudellista koneistoa ollut juuri järkeä kohdistaa länsimaihin, joiden miehittäminen olisi todennäköisesti johtanut laajamittaiseen poliittiseen vastarintaan muista länsimaista russofobian takia.

Venäjän valloitettua Ruotsin siirtomaa-alue Suomen, alkoi Venäjä aluksi venäläistämään aluetta lähinnä sotilaallisen johdon alaisuudessa, mutta muutaman suomalaisuuden pioneerin ansioista Venäjä päätti antaa Suomelle autonomisen aseman. Venäläisille paljastui Suomen olevan itsenäinen kansa, joka on ollut Ruotsin vallan alaisuudessa ja erinomainen mahdollisuus luoda uusi puskurivaltio Venäjän ja vihamielisen Ruotsin ja mahdollisesti muiden länsivaltojen väliin. Jo tuhansia vuosia Euroopassa jatkunut ”idän vihollisen” perinne teki Venäjälle täysin selväksi, että joskus länsivaltiot tulisivat taas hyökkäämään Venäjälle niin kuin Napoleon sitten tekikin. Jos Suomi olisi ollut Venäjälle alistettu kansa, olisi Venäjä joutunut pitämän Suomea alaisuudessaan kenties sotilaallisella voimalla, mutta vähintäänkin painostamalla, tämä painostus ja sotilaallinen voima olisi joutunut tulemaan voimista, jotka olisi muuten voitu kohdistaa Keski-Eurooppaan. Venäjän näkökulmasta on päivänselvä etu vapauttaa etnisesti erilainen Suomi omaksi autonomiseksi alueekseen ja siten vähentää Venäjän voimavarojen keskityksen tarvetta alueelle. Kun pitää mielessä Venäjän alunperinkin ottaneen Suomen lähes vahingossa ruotsalaisten romahdettua, on helppo ymmärtää venäläisten laiskuus alueen sisäistämisessä omaan imperiumiinsa yhtä vahvasti kuin esimerkiksi Baltia, joihin kohdistui määrätietoinen venäläistämiskampanja ja sotatoimet oli pitkään harkittuja ja toteutus kesti kauan. Tällaista aluetta ei heti haluttu luovuttaa pois, vaan oli kriittistä pitää siitä kiinni.

Vasta pitkälle nationalismin aikakautena alkoi Suomen todellinen venäläistämisen aika, jota seurasi myös Suomen aseistakieltäytymis-liikkeen synty 1902-1904, jolloin kymmenet tuhannet suomalaiset miehet kieltäytyivät palvelemasta Venäjän armeijassa. Kuten vuonna 2004 myös vuona 1904 yritti Venäjän valtio pakottaa Suomen kansalaisia toimimaan asevoimissaan, mutta vähitellen tästä luovuttiin hyödyttömänä. Kuitenkin jo paljon ennen tätä 1800-luvun loppupuolelle mentäessä, alkoi venäläistämiskampanja todenteolla, kun Venäjän alueellinen eteneminen itään hidastui vastaan tullessa Kiina, Yhdysvallat ja Iso-Britannia(Kanada). Nyt kun Venäjän imperiumi oli saavuttanut laajimman alueellisen kokonaisuutensa, jota se voi saavuttaa ilman laajamittaisia sotatoimia naapureitaan vastaan, kääntyi imperiumi sisäänpäin ja alkoi vahvistaa omia alueitaan ja alueellista koheesiotaan, josta seurasi looginen Suomen venäläistämisen aika samaan aikaan, kun moni muu Venäjän vallan alla ollut kansa alkoi kokea samankaltaisia paineita. On hyvä muistaa Suomen erityislaatuinen tilanne Suomessa olleen pienen ruotsinkielisen eliitin jatkaneen Suomen hallintoa autonomian nimissä Venäjän vallan alaisuudessa. Periaatteessa voidaan siis laskea Suomen olleen kolmi-hallinnollinen yhteiskunta, suomalaiset ruotsalaisen eliitin alla, Venäjän imperiumin alla autonomiassa. Tähän ruotsalaista eliittiä uhanneeseen toimeen reagoitiin suitsuttamalla suomalaista nationalismia ruotsalaisuuden ehdoilla. Luomalla mielikuvaa siitä, kuinka ruotsalaiset ovat suomalaisia ja kuinka ruotsalaiset ovat aina olleet suomalaisia legendaarisella ”Ruotsalaisia emme ole, venäläisiksi emme halua, olkaamme siis suomalaisia.” Ne harvat suomalaiset, jotka olivat historiaa opiskelleet ja muistaneet, todennäköisesti pyörittelivät epäuskoisina silmiään, kun Tukholmassa ruotsalaiseen valtasukuun syntynyt Snellman julistaa olevansa suomalainen. Jos olisin kyyninen historiantutkija voisin huomauttaa Snellmannin ja muiden ruotsin sukuisten valtasukujen huomanneen yleiseurooppalaisen itsenäistymisen ja nationalismin kehityksen, joka johtaa siihen, että pieniä eliittejä, jotka ovat pitkään hallinneet suuria ihmisryhmiä sysätään pois vallasta ja teloitetaan, kuten esimerkiksi Ranskassa. Tästä viisastuneena ruotsalainen eliitti todennäkösesti ymmärsi, että ainoa keino pitää kiinni omasta vallastaan ja oma pää olkapäillä on ”muuttua” suomalaisiksi. Tätä 85% suomalaisista, jotka puhuivat suomea eikä ruotsia ovat kenties katsoneet lähinnä huvittuneina[12]. 500 vuotta valtaa pitänyt eliitti, joka on kokoajan korostanut erilaisuuttaan ruotsinkielellään virastokielenä eikä minkäänlaista dialogia alueen enemmistö kielellä suomella saanut käydä ennen kuin ruotsinsukuinen Lönnrot kirjoitti Kalevalan, jonka jälkeen suomen kieli ”löydettiin” samoilta alueilta, jossa se on ilmeisesti nykyisten tieteellisten tutkimusten perusteella ollut ainakin 1000 vuotta. Vaikka Agricola kehitti Suomen kirjoitetun kielen jo 1550, oli Suomessa kaikissa virallisissa instansseissa käytössä ruotsinkieli pitkälle 1800-luvun loppupuolelle. On helppo vetää paralleeleja suomen kieltä ja suomalaisten kohtelulle 1500-1800 luvuilla ja Amerikan intiaanien kohtelulle 1500-1800 luvuilla, ensimmäiset raamatut käännettiin paikallisten kielelle 1600 luvun alussa tai 1500 luvun lopussa, lähteiden puutteen takia tarkkaa päivämäärä on vaikea saada. Silti Yhdysvalloissa ei alueilla, jossa enemmistö oli Amerikan intiaaneja, saanut käyttää virastokielenä paikallisia kieliä lähinnä valloittajien ylemmyyden tunteen takia. 

Suomen siis jouduttua Venäjän vallan alaisuuteen 1809 ja sitä seuranneena aikana vuoteen 1917 asti, suomalaisten asema vuoronperään helpottui ja vaikeutui Venäjän pyrkiessä vuorotellen laajentamaan ja keskittämään valtaansa minkä tahansa muun imperiumin tavoin. Euroopassa syntyneiden liberalistisen, nationalisten ja sosialististen vallankumousten aallon seurauksena entinen ruotsalainen eliitti yhdistyi suomalaiseen väestöön pitäen kuitenkin vanhat valta-asemansa ja valtasuvuille kuuluvat satojen vuosien aikaiset taloudelliset imperialistisesti saavutetut edut. Tämä on yksi pääsyitä vieläkin havaittavaan suomenruotsalaisten ja ruotsin sukuisten sukujen suureen varallisuus eroon verrattuna etnisesti suomalaiseen väestöön. Samankaltainen väestön eriarvoisuus on havaittavissa lähes jokaisessa siirtomaassa, jossa eliitti on vieläkin vallassa. Satojen vuosien taloudellisten etujen purkaminen avoimella kilpailulla ei onnistu yhdessä vuosisadassa. 

Suomi itsenäistyy, sotii ja lopulta joutuu taas Satelliitiksi

Suomen itsenäistyttyä 1917 ensimmäisen maailmansodan melskeissä ja sitä seurannut sisällissota oli jo ensimmäisistä laukauksistaan ensimmäisen maailmansodan osa. Sodan alusta oli selvää, että Saksan keisarikunta halusi tehdä Suomesta osan omaa keisarikuntaansa ja tästä on selvänä historiallisena todisteena valkoisten pyrkimys tehdä Suomesta kuningaskunta ja pyytää Saksan keisarin sukulainen Suomen kuninkaaksi[13]. Tätä tarkoitusta varten siirrettiin Suomeen joukkoja suoraan Saksan armeijasta tukemaan Suomen valkoisia ja muun muassa Helsinki oli saksalaisten sotilaiden komennossa sodan loputtua. Punaisten poliittinen päämäärä oli omien sanojensa mukaan tehdä Suomesta parlamentaarinen demokratia sosiaalisen demokratian, Yhdysvaltain ja Sveitsin inspiroimana[14]. Riippumatta siitä kumpi puoli oli poliittisesti oikeassa, on hyvä muistaa valkoisen Suomen halunneen tehdä Suomesta kuningaskunnan Saksan alaisuuteen ja punaisen Suomen halunneen tehdä Suomesta sosiaali-demokraattisen tasavallan Sveitsin mallin mukaisesti. Tätä pohjaa vasten joudutaan tarkastelemaan Suomen identiteetti- politiikkaa sitä seuranneena aikana. On siis olemassa jo tuhat vuotta jatkunut trendi. Jossa on eliitin identiteettipolitiikka ja kansan identiteettipolitiikka. Kansa on systemaattisesti halunnut määrittää itse oman kohtalonsa oman tahtonsa mukaisesti omaa kieltään käyttäen ja eliitti on systemaattisesti halunnut keskittää vallan itselleen kansan tahdosta välittämättä. 

Tätä pohjaa vasten on hyvä muodostaa oikea identiteettiprojekti. On yleistä puhua kansan vihollisesta ja kansan määränpäästä, mihin kansa haluaa ja mistä kansa tulee ja tämä on selvästi ollut tämän kurssin ja kurssiohjelman perimmäinen tarkoitus, selvittää miten Suomen kansan identiteetti on luotu Venäjän identiteettiä vastaan. On kuitenkin tärkeä muistaa, että Suomen kansan identiteetti on ollut olemassa jo kauan ennen kuin Ruotsi saapui Suomeen. Suomen kansan identiteettipoliittinen projekti eliitin hallitsemana on sama identiteettipoliittinen projekti eliitin hallitsemana, kuin missä tahansa muualla Euroopassa koko Euroopan historian ajan. Itsemäärittelemänsä eliitin pyrkimys korostaa kulttuurien välisiä eroja Machiavellin periaatteiden mukaan[15]. Luo ulkoinen vihollinen, syytä niitä, jotka eivät suostu sotaan ulkoista vihollista vastaan maanpettureiksi ja ohjaa kansaa kulisseista. Tämä eliitin identiteettipoliittinen projekti Suomen kannalta on siis vailla varsinaista sisältöä ja projektin ainoa sisältö on systemaattinen yritys viedä huomio pois eliitin oman valtansa pönkittämisestä heikompien harmiksi. 

Talvisota ja jatkosota ovat saman identiteettipoliittisen projektin jälkeläisiä, tosin eivät Suomen identiteettipoliittisen projektin vaan Saksan ja Neuvostoliiton välisen projektin. Saksa ja Neuvostoliitto loivat kummatkin omaa projektiaan luomalla ulkoisia ja sisäisiä mielikuvitus vihollisia, joita vastaan sotiminen lopulta käynnisti toisen maailmansodan. Tämä identiteettiprojekti ei juuri eronnut Suomen identiteetinprojekteista, joita Suomi sitten jatkosodassa kohdistikin Neuvostoliittoon. Nykyaikana sodat ovat lähes poikkeuksetta talousintressien luomia pönkittääkseen omaa hallintaansa maailman resursseihin. Sotia ei ole tarkoitus voittaa, niitä on tarkoitus jatkaa, sota huumeita, terrorismia, Irakia, Vietnamia, epäoikeudenmukaisuutta, köyhyyttä, kurjuutta, näitä sotia ei ole tarkoitus voittaa, sotia on tarkoitus jatkaa ja tilannetta on tarkoitus pahentaa kulisseissa, jotta oikeutus sodan jatkamiseen saataisiin[16]. Sodan jatkaminen on sodan päämäärä niille, joita sota rikastaa, valitettavasti minulla ei ole aikaa tässä esseessä kuvailla tarkasti miksi modernien sotien ja konfliktien päämäärä ei ole sodan voitto vaan sodan jatkaminen ja miten super-rikas eliitti tästä hyötyy. Voin vain sanoa, että samainen identiteettipolitiikka projekti, jossa eliitti usuttaa kansat toistensa kimppuun saadakseen huomion pois itsestään, jatkuu samankaltaisena, kun se on jatkunut Euroopassa tuhansia vuosia ja Suomessakin reilut 500 vuotta. 

Suomen identiteettiprojektin kannalta tärkein osa nykyisessä maailmassa on olla hiljaa, istua kulmassa, ja olla sanomatta niitä itsestään selviä totuuksia, jotka tuijottavat aikaamme silmiin. Tilanne muistuttaa kauhunomaisesti toista maailmansotaa, kukaan ei ole valmis myöntämään mitä eliitti suunnittelee, vaikka suunnitelmat ovat avoimesti esillä joka paikassa. Toivomme vain, että tämä myrsky menisi meidän ohi, eliitti ymmärtäisi, että maassa makaavaa ei potkita, valitettavasti näin ei tule käymään. Palatakseni kuitenkin ajassa hieman taaksepäin, aikaan toisen maailmansodan jälkeen. Suomi joutui sodan jälkeen Neuvostoliiton satelliitiksi, omatahtoiseksi satelliitiksi, mutta satelliitiksi silti. On turha sanoa, että pienen valtion on pakko olla suuren valtion satelliittina, tämä ei yksinkertaisesti ole totta eikä ole koskaan ollut totta. Silti toisen maailmansodan jälkeen Suomi joutui Neuvostoliiton satelliitiksi ja Neuvostoliiton romahdettua lähes välittömästi EU:n liittyminen ja Euroopan neuvoston satelliitiksi joutuminen kuvaa pitkää trendiä, jossa itsenäistä Suomea pelottaa itsenäisyys ja etsitään minkä tahansa suuren valtion turvaa ja tukea, välittämättä tämän valtion moraalisista tai taloudellisista pyrkimyksistä. Suomen liittolaiset eivät historiallisesti ole olleet järin moraalisia, keisarillinen Saksa, natsi-Saksa, Neuvostoliitto ja nyt Euroopan unioni. 

Joka tapauksessa, lopetan tämän esseen samaan tilanteeseen kuin aloitin. Mihin tästä? Suomen kehitys tulevaisuudessa riippuu Suomen kyvystä seisoa moraalisesti omilla jaloillaan ja erota liitoista, jotka menettävät moraalisen asemansa, ennen kuin se on liian myöhäistä. Olemme tässä onnistuneet ennen erotessamme akselivalloista toisen maailmansodan lopulla, toivottavasti tajuamme erota tästä Euroopan imperiumista kun vielä voimme[17].

I saw this world in a flash of imagination, it’s not a real world, yet. How this world began, how it differed from our world was an event in 2010 or so. For a few glimpses all the people on earth woke up from the dream they call reality, walking around asleep. For a few brief moments they understood the beauty of everything, how all life is sacred beyond words yet all life is transient. They could feel how their actions affected the universe, how the universe made them, all the secrets of their lives and finally they could, for a few short moments, see how the world around them was filled with spirits, both benevolent and malevolent. What followed was a period of months where frantic efforts to understand what just happened took place. The religions quickly lost their meaning since no one needed to be told there is no heaven or hell, there is no purgatory or Elysium. In the years that followed, humanity understood the driving force behind many of the wars on this world was not the human mind and the human desire, but the desire of others who live on this world. Spirits and entities, creatures of the night and creatures of the day. All the while they live here and they live amidst us but they are never us. One might call them vampires or demons or akuzas. The name doesn’t matter, what matters is that they were entities that manipulated us, who took our dreams, our desires and our yearnings and turned it against us. Those who desired peace were left alone, those who desired to speak were struck mad and simply sat in emptiness speaking as they gently rocked back and forth. Once, long ago, it was what we desired, we took an apple from the tree of knowledge, we reached to experience this world, but now it is no longer a world we wanted, what we wanted from now we did not know but we did know that for now, this is not what we wanted. Keeping our desire to want a new dream we woke up, we looked around us and said, "you are no longer welcome here spirits, this is our world, our dream and you must leave, we command it." Then they left, in all quietness the power of a billion minds in unison screaming silently focused the whole universe for a moment and they had no choice but to go. The cycle was broken, the dream was remade and we could no longer be in what we were. When we were longer in what we were they had nothing to gain from us and those who wanted nothing from us, those who were guiding us took a step back, looked, and said, "my pupil, you are no ready to stand on your own, I wish you the best as I take a step back and rest." 

So in 2010, we woke up, screamed silently in our mind and the world was struck empty by our psychic blast. The next few centuries would be our golden age, when our civilization reached such heights as never before. There was no galactic brotherhood to come to our age for the good form no such nets for the good understand the good of all, to form a net to protect you from what you desire is to imply the universe can do no such thing. The good would not be so arrogant. There was no galactic evil to come and consume us, for a billion mind saying no in unison was enough to keep the most adamant predators away, like a light shone in the it kept the animals at bay and any who were drawn by the light were burned by the light until there were none. So we sat and thought, who do we want to be, where do we want to go from here, do we want to keep this shared dream or disperse to the four corners of the universal wind. It was decided that for the next thousand years we would think of this, think of what we desired to do. A thousand years is a long time to wait so we needed something to do, a plan was quickly set upon. We decided that no matter what we do we would need to clear our past, not for our karma since there is no punishment, not for our soul since there is no heaven or hell, not for any outsider since there were none, simply for ourselves, since there was nothing but our own minds with us for the next thousand years. What we did was marvelous, having dreamed many a work of fiction I’ve seen many a world with beauty beyond words. Having shared in many a dream of fiction I’ve seen many a world with beauty beyond words. So I ask that you, dear participant in this dream, understand when I say what I saw was beyond the world beyond dreams. What I saw was a world come together, join together and help life together, I saw the creation of a soul. When all the pieces of a man, formed in a dream but shattered in a nightmare come together to form a single spirit, these single shards of reality coalesce and form a vast stellar nebula of dreams. A nebula that spreads itself across the surface of the planet, gives shape to dreams and reality to those little wishes that have nothing but the emptiness of space and the totality of the other side. Without this nebula of dreams nothing would happen, the dreams of knightly orders who battle evil, the dreams of doctors who save lives, the dreams of men and women to form a family and stretch the boundaries of life would be nothing if not for those little shards. The little shards that stand in the middle, that ebb and flow between this world and the other. The little drops of water at the riptide that give the oceans their endless struggle with land. 

What we did was magnificent, in a year we knew what the first step would be, the first step on this long but easy path of our first steps. They were our first steps since in the eon preceeding this moment we were never alone, there were evils to harm us, good to protect us and the cloak of illusion around us to keep us warm. Now we were walking on our own for the first time. The first step would be both, the way which we take the step and the first path on the road. Stumble here and we would fall, face first and those who guard us would cringe in pain but urge us on. We knew that this quiet time of introspection would require peace of the unprecedented kind, global peace and global end to war and conflicts was a forgone conclusion. The peace we sought was the peace of solitude, the peace of withdrawing from our old habits and starting new ones. The peace found only in a crowd of few. So we decided that there would need to be less of us. When the decision was made there was no outcry, no public anger, private anger or anger of any kind, there was simple determination to give all souls that lived as humans the choice to stay as humans and join us in this thousand year reflection on who we are. Five hundred million of us, that was to be the number. The number we would keep for the next thousand years. There would be no deaths beyond the natural, all life was sacred and every moment of life was to be protected as adamantly as all life in the universe. So what was called for was a lottery, a lottery not on those who would live but a lottery on those who would give birth, only one in twenty would stay as they were and the rest would be sterilized. It was a decision that came from the deepest conviction in the human heart, the conviction to see every living creature as an equal, like a child of once own. To give our children, the creatures of earth rest and respite. Realizing that one world would not be enough to redeem us for our past we set about breathing life to all the quiet corners of our home. The pressure cooker of Venus, the quiet plains of Mars, the ever watchful Luna. 

A quiet moment was taken and a quiet moment was given. How would we breath life to these planets, how would we bring them to fruition. What would it take for every nook and cranny of these small worlds to crawl with life? For Venus it was decided that life much like that found in the depths of the ocean was what is called for. Carefully studying all the life on earth, mapping it, slowly and meticulously building a new life. Like a parent carefully making clothes for a dear child we sew together a new life, a life that could gently rock as the wind blew past in the cloud tops of Venus. It was small, smaller than what could be seen but still it held a promise never before heard, a promise of life on that harshest of worlds. The creature we made was a simple creature, a cell no bigger than those found on a human, fit to survive in the atmosphere and use the sunlight, the nutrients and all that was available to make copies of itself. To stop it from sinking too deep and burning we gave it long strands like tendrils that would extend from its center out into the heavens. The higher it rose in the atmosphere the less pressure it would feel and the cell would expand and the strands would contract and it would start to sink again as the air could no longer carry it with it. As it sank deeper the pressure would squeeze it tight in its grip and the tendrils would expand outwards from the core and catch the wind rushing by and lift it up. These we seeded to the great gaseous ocean of Venus. The atmosphere so thick that our creation could be born in the air and die in the air, spend its life floating on a sea of wind. Then we watched and waited, would the life we birthed triumph, bring life to the hottest of worlds or would it immolate and succumb. We did not need to watch for long when the first signs of its success became apparent and not long after that there were vast shoals of the new life floating in the wind. The small cells connected to each other by their long tendrils and not long afterwards they were riding the wind like a vast flight of birds. Gradually Venus’s green and yellow atmosphere was filled with patches of all the colors of the rainbow. The creatures we made reflected the light of the sun back out again helping Venus cool. For as long as they would survive Venus would glow like a million rainbows for all to see. 

To help earth breath free of the pollutions of farming and fishing we turned to Venus. A planet now teeming with life and energy, a planet waiting to cool down and exhale the thick coat it has. A planet waiting to let go of the long lifeless winter and watch life pour all across its surface. To ease its burden we made ships both small and big and like the fishermen of our home Earth used to do we pulled our nets behind us as we rode in the great wave flickering with the colors of the rainbow. The life we gave to Venus is giving life back to earth. The cells we gather were used to feed a planet forced to bear the burden of many mouths for a long time. Even with all the advances left behind by our former masters we still needed a home, food and shelter, we still needed to live on this world and this world still wanted us to live here. A planet breathing heavily after an ordeal of giving birth. A planet looking at us, its children and asking, what will you be little once, how will you treat the one who gave you life. To ease the burden on our home we looked elsewhere for the last ingredient we needed, a planet that needed what we had and we needed what it had. We looked to mars. 

Mars, a planet so cold and stripped of air that its once vast oceans were now little more than dry riverbeds and vast plateaus. What we needed was what mars could provide, a home for our great machines, a home for us to build what we needed to build. For many centuries Venus would provide the food as it slowly cooled so too mars would provide the machines as it slowly warmed. It was decided that to help mars all of our industry would be move there. As quickly as could be done we moved everything we would need and the rest we gave back to nature. Soon the peaks and hills of mars were filled with humans of all shapes and sizes. Building and working to bring to fruition an old spirit in humanity, the spirit of the new, the pioneer, the spirit of the one who dreams of better things, of bolder worlds. It was decided that mars would need the great shocks of heat that only a meteorite could provide, the great shocks of heat that a dead world needed to wake to a new era. First the two moons, the loyal friends that had seen many things as they gently danced around mars were to plummet to the North Pole in a final dance that would bring its old dance partner back to life. Then many more, from all the corners of the solar system we searched for them, large and small and they were sent on the long fall to the surface. For centuries we confined ourselves to but a fraction of the surface of mars, letting nature do her work while we did ours. As heat flowed to the surface of mars the vast oceans locked in the deep cold bosom of mars were released. As water slowly began to flow the old riverbeds came to life like the veins on a man who only recently let out his final sigh. Like the steady pulse of a heart filled with life, the comets came tumbling down the long hill, until finally coming to rest on the surface. The heat slowly let the rivers flow and the surface melt. More would be needed if we wanted mars to truly come alive. Thousands and thousands of rocks small and large were sent plummeting to the surface until finally hardly anyone could recognize the once serene planet. Vast mountains were formed and mars gained a new life. The planet now bigger than before could no longer hold the ice locked within and the great oceans were filled once more. 

After centuries of this the only thing lacking from mars was the last step. To bring life here, to this once barren world now filled with oceans so vast that the great mariners of earth would call them by different names. Many forms of life were slowly planted on this world, forms of life that would bring a new layer to the world, a new intricate part to the whole. After centuries of plummeting rocks and rising oceans the last pioneers were ready to leave the world, their work down, what earth needed was built, what we needed was done and the planet was ready to be released from our hold. First there were the lichens, the moss, the bacteria, and the krill, all those that were small, all those that could survive. Then it was the depth of the sea, the deep sea animals, for the sea was a gentle host, in the sea you could survive. There were sharks in the sea of mars before there were more than ants living on land. The sea was teeming with life and slowly the bands of green like the leaves of a tree, expanded from the rivers reaching the land. It would take a long time but mars would be alive again. The few humans that remained behind were there to observe, to monitor, and to slowly guide life until it could stand on its own when even they would have to leave. Mars would be a quiet world, a world reserved for the animals that need a home, the souls that we harmed could all live there, with the promise that they would be safe there for the next thousand years.

The centuries that mars felt the impact of many a comet of heat were the centuries we used to build what we needed. Houses to replace those that would slowly fall and crumble, the cities that would crumble under nature's slow expansion into the lands we used. As we gave way to the plants and animals that needed homes we gave up our great cities and looked for new homes. Many would still remain on earth but as there we far fewer of us there were vast areas that were left entirely to nature. The centuries we needed were used to build mighty machines of protection that would keep out all those who lived outside of our home who wanted to use us or the planets we so carefully guided. It would be our next duty in this process we started, the duty of watching over the life we owe a debt to. The few million of us that remained on earth would carefully tend to our children, educate them in the history of us, how we waged war, how we made music, how we finally came to understand, how we came to wake up. The rest were guarding us, our home and the planets we all nurture.

After a millennium of peace and life earth would still be the same, when you stand on the surface of Luna and look down you could still see the familiar shapes, years of change would create lakes where there were rivers, hills where there were valleys and life where there was none. Earth would still be Earth. If you stand there and look at Venus you could see the familiar spot in the sky but it would no longer be yellow and green, nor would it shimmer in the colors of the rainbow, it would glow in a familiar blue and green hue, the waves of life on the winds of Venus long gone, years of careful and ponderous steps have brought life to all the smallest of canyons and the largest of fields. Life accustomed to so much sunshine, to so much heat that it would not live anywhere else. A world where humans have never set foot, a world where humans would be the aliens, a world filled with so much life that jungles in the deepest parts of the world would be the only place that could stand next and not feel ashamed. Turn your gaze to another direction and see the surface of mars. Life there evolved to a pace not seen anywhere, the unbearable lightness of being holds special meaning to this world, a world where the animals are large, the life is fast and nearly every form of life can fly. Like the whales on the oceans of Earth there are massive creatures floating in the sky of mars, creatures that dwarf even the largest of animals ever seen before. Creatures that find floating easy in the light gravity of a planet still so small. One thing holds true for all three worlds. Life is teeming on their surface and humanity is proudly protecting them. No longer living at home but not yet out in the stars most of us are living on Luna. The ever quiet watcher, the one that always watches the earth, watches our children, the life on earth as it slowly heals. Deep cities carved into the depths of the moon give us shelter, a home a place where we can live and share a dream of what we wish to be, of what our future holds, what we want to do now that we have left the cradle. Like an ant network our caves and homes stretch for vast distances underground and like ants we share our best ideas in anticipation for the time when our long watch ends a millennium after we first woke up.
