PS: a collection of thoughts from my less than cheery moments.
As human civilization progresses more and more powerful means of creation are available for every individual, this will inevitably reach a point where a single individual can create something that even the combined effort of all individuals will not be able to stop. You can step in front of an arrow and stop it from hitting someone, you can step in front of a gun and hopefully stop it from hitting someone behind you but how do you step in front of something that feeds from you. How do you stop a virus or a nanorobot? Eventually technology will reach a point where the average citizen can create a retrovirus so deadly that it will eliminate most of the human race if released. There are only 3 ways to avoid this outcome.
1. A utopian state where people love each other and the very idea of harming another human is so unheard of and so impossible to even fathom that it will never come to pass.
2. Dystopian police state where no individual could possibly build such a virus without it being known and immediately stopped. This will be even more unlikely as any attempt to enforce such a level of police control would be object to and resisted by even the most conservative citizens. When everyone from politician to Joe sixpack will be monitored at all times and controlled like cattle resistance will reach a point where civilization will collapse on its own. Dystopian option also includes use of chemical to destroy or make human resistance impossible such as mind control drugs.
3. Annihilation of most of the human race through the use of an advanced biological or other dangerous substance such as self replicating nanorobots.
I foresee number 2 or number 3 as the most likely alternative. Number 3 by a wide margin over number 2 that has an equal wide margin over number 1 at roughly a rate of 1:100:100.000
I will stand here online waiting for my time and hope that we as a race still have enough time before the bells finally toll for us all.
We will begin again, we will begin anew, until then I will sit here and wait for you.
Even when the plague is spreading and society begins to collapse I will sit here.
Look out this window and hope that sometime somewhere someone will learn from our mistakes.
The end of the human race is quiet for there will be none left to toll the bells.

It is only a matter of time until someone goes to Zaire, contracts Ebola and travels to the western world, spreads it around a bit and kills 2 billion people directly and the following societal collapse will knock the human population to 300 million at best. With no way to manage or restart society, since all cities will be infected, all factories, no way to produce anything we would slowly decline. After a few generations there would only be rumors and ruins. Rumors of the great beings that were, that built spires that touched the sky and flew on wings of fire across the sky and it will take 10.000 years for us to be here again, talking, all you need to do is go to the middle of a busy shopping mall, close your eyes and look up. You can hear the faint sound of bells tolling, the slow silent death of our civilization approaching. Perhaps some future generation will find the remains of my computer locked away in an ice sheet. Find these thoughts and look back and think, what he was like I wonder. It is as if the future is looking at us, wondering.
